A Thousand Sons
A Thousand Sons (Horus Heresy) by Graham McNeill
I do feel that with the Horus Heresy Series half of the fun is the anticipation of the next novel – Black Library are doing a great job of spacing out the novels and leaving us followers pacing a dark room for months (combi bolters in hand) awaiting eagerly the next novel…
All in all i thought the book was a peculiar one in the series mainly due to the characters involved, the Thousand Sons are not traditional Astartes and so i didn’t find it as easy to form an emotional bond as I have with other Heresy Characters (Loken, Garro etc) who are the more archetypal superhuman alpha males where as the TS are more sorcerers than traditional warriors.
The book starts pre-heresy with background and a great deal of coverage on the TS, how their minds work, their ‘powers‘ etc however half way through the book there is a large shift from Thousand Sons history to the actual Heresy – and to me this was a little bit too much of a wait for the bit i was most interested in.
Is it me or was Black Library keeping Horus from the novel in person intentionally? I think we may hear more of him in Prospero Burns at the other end of the scale regarding the well known conversation with Russ, the novel does feature other Primarchs albeit Russ aside they are appear briefly.
Overall i know it was the largest HH book yet but i feel it could of taken a different approach with maybe only a quarter of the book being the history of the Legion and more time taken on the actual events during the heresy.
However being no author myself, it was a great read Graham has done a great job of portraying the TS as what they are, Magnus himself came across as possibly the only Primarch who could of defeated Horus but then obviously in the book you find out he has a choice to make which will either lead to enlightenment or ….
